Brothers Mike and Spence Nelson began Hi-Tech Metal Finishing in 1993 as a captive plating shop in Lewisville, Texas. The shop served Mayday Manufacturing, a leading aerospace machined-parts manufacturer founded by the brothers’ father in the 1960s.
Most parts that Mayday manufactured required finishing, so it made logistical sense to bring plating services in-house. The Hi-Tech Metal Finishing facility was located in the same industrial park as Mayday, giving them the ability to deliver complete components in just a few days, instead of the weeks or even months these projects required when using subcontractors.
The Nelsons obtained finishing approvals from primary customers such as Boeing, Bell Helicopter, General Dynamics, Grumman, McDonnell Douglas and Northrop. With the advent of the National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation Program (NADCAP), approvals became much easier, and the company’s customer list expanded quickly.
In 1995, the company moved from Lewisville, Texas to an expanded location in Denton, Texas. The new location gave the company the ability to expand its capacity to include heat treating and prime and paint; cadmium plating; chromic and sulfuric anodizing; and Alodine/chem film. The facility can also perform magnetic particle inspection and liquid penetrant inspection for customers who require nondestructive testing.
Hi-Tech Metal Finishing’s unique relationship with Mayday Manufacturing also means it can source aerospace parts more quickly and with more quality control than other shops. In many cases, Mayday may already have a customer’s required part on hand. It also maintains a blueprint repository which can be used in the manufacturing and finishing of parts. This ongoing partnership has reduced lead times significantly.
Today, Hi-Tech Metal Finishing has become a leader in metal finishing goods and services, delivering high quality products and services with a personalized touch – all at a value price.
